How much money was wasted, how many lives placed in danger, because someone didn’t think the rules applied to them?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The article doesn’t say that the puppy wasn’t on a leash, but it seems the likeliest scenario.

Yeah,
I often wonder how I ended up living a day’s drive from any mountains, and two day
s from any ocean. Idiot me.

You can get to SC in a day... it sucks but it’s doable

Heh, not the way (and Jeep) I drive. Even on the interstate it’s hard getting anywhere fast 150 miles at a time between fuel stops.

2 people injured. Saving a puppy. Off a cliff.
Pretty sure that puppy belongs to John Wick!

I feel sorry for the mountain bikers around here. At least half the dogs I saw hiking the other day weren’t on a leash or under voice control. They poop all over the trail and chase bikes (and people). Not cool.

Not counting the Ozarks, Ou
achitas, or the Wichita Mt. Wildlife Refuge, we’re ~
10 hours from the NM
Rockies, and about the same distance from white sand beaches on the Gulf. Ocean? Yeah...

I would pretty unhappy if I suffered traumatic injuries for a puppy my friend brought to the wilderness for some reason.

FWIW, going in reverse a dog can slip out of a collar, or even a harness.

I’ve had to use my bike defensively before which really sucks because I love dogs, but hate their owners sometimes.

I run daily, and dogs off leashes is a big problem. They start to chase, and you just have to assume it is going to bit you. Even well behaved dogs terrify me sometimes. I’ve only ever met one dog I’m okay with being off a leash. I was running with my sister one time and we see a couple walking their little puppy (I mean a couple weeks old probably). Predictably, the dog is curious and starts to head towards us. The owners see this immediately and tell it to stop. That puppy stoped so fast, it almost rotated over its own head. That dog can be off a leash in my book. Everybody else, please be considerate and keep your dog on a leash if you are walking it where it could chase somebody.

I can’t list the number of times I’ve almost hit a poor pupper or almost been clotheslined by a retractable leash an an oblivious dog owner.

Well she is totally untrustworthy in a wild setting, she would go after a lizard anywhere. Even on a leash she leaps off the trail.

Like in this instance or the past 10 years? What kind of timeframe are we talking about?

I have been thinking about moving somewhere else for a while now, and while I do miss a lot of things about the Midwest and would like to move back, being a multiple days drive away from remote mountains rules out most of it for me.

Do we need a leash on my driveway?

yes... I’m a member of a local trails advocacy group and it is an amazingly contentious issue. We had a little kid get knocked down a steep embankment by a large, off leash dog a few years back. Plus, it’s a safety issue for your own animal - they can get injured or worse too...

I can’t imagine letting my dogs off leash outside of a controlled area. That was true even when I had dogs that I had a chance in hell of catching if they took off after something.
I can already tell you that Cornbread would spot a squirrel and be 1/4 mile away before I could even finish yelling his name. He has great eyes and zero attention span so he’s always looking for something.

I believe he broke an arm, or his wrist.. not sure, but just bumps/scrapes otherwise. He looked 8-9 in the writeup I saw . But it was a relatively easy and popular trail, so kids are fairly common.

If the dog was okay, maybe it’s the kids who should be banned?

T here were some folks that leaned in that direction... and I suppose not that different than other health/safety issues where some folks just don’t want to take any responsibility. I think the solution is just to hold people liable - no different than car crashes really.

The common story I’ve seen is: dog goes into water, gets in trouble, owner goes into water to rescue dog, owner drowns
, dog finds its way back to land

Jesus fucking christ.. Youre 100% correct - this should have never happened and it put SAR at risk for something that, again, never should have happened . Fucking amateurs man..
That is also one cute as hell dog and obviously he is not at fault for this.
Also, i love in telluride theres an 18 year old on SAR. But im sure that kid is a badass if he grew up down there.

We have a large park nearby that allows off- leash dogs:
Pretty much the only place I’ll le
t them go off-
leash around but even then it took a lot of training before I was confident enough in the dogs’ training to let them run free in a place with so many distractions. Zero chance I would let a puppy off-leash.

No updates. I’ve been looking at ZJs and WJs as well in hopes of finding something more comfortable but still capable , but nothing has grabbed me.
